It claims it’ll also upload pictures. Now this I’ve got to see…

Pretty impressive! (and these image formatting tools are certainly an improvement over Office 2003).

You can also tag your posts…the categories are all pulled down from the blog.

Okay, enough of the image effects already.

Well I’m impressed. It actually works. Now there’s no excuse not to post…

As a photography enthusiast (albeit a shamefully inactive one) I am incensed by the notion of restricting photography in public places. According to Simon Taylor, there are moves afoot in the UK to do just this and so he has started a petition against it.

As it turns out, there is no actual Bill being put forward by the government. Mr Taylor is referring to

the ID cards proposed by various bodies which will serve to create an ‘uber class’ of photographer, and restrict the use of cameras by normal citizens.

The fact that there is no legislation in the pipeline has not prevented me from signing the petition. I have personally been harassed by security guards for taking photographs in the City of London with a tripod. It angered me that I was allowed to use my camera hand-held, or indeed to support it on a wall with a beanbag - but that the use of a tripod was prohibited. I believe that anyone should be allowed to take photographs of any public place - regardless of whether they use a tripod to steady the camera!

If you feel the same and you live in the UK then perhaps you should sign the petition too:

So I just upgraded this blog to WordPress 2.1. It has some really cool features; mainly on the editing side. But I have to say, the thing that irks me about WordPress is that it is a browser evangelism platform.

Previous versions would just show a “Get Firefox” link. But the new version ups the ante with the following link:

The “Browse Happy” campaign says

Internet Explorer can make your computer unsafe. Why not switch to a browser that’s more secure?

It goes on to recommend Firefox, Mozilla, Opera or Safari as browsers that will keep you “Online. Worry free.”

Alright, I like FireFox. And I would be quite happy to admit that in many ways it is better than Internet Explorer. But I’m afraid it is just plain wrong to say that Firefox is so safe that you can browse without worry.

The fact is that FireFox used to be safer. When it was a new player in the browser world, hackers weren’t going to waste time trying to find it’s vulnerabilities. But now that it’s a popular browser, the hackers are targeting it too. There have been many FireFox vulnerabilities exposed recently - some of them very dangerous; allowing hackers to take control of your computer.

Fact: if you are using a popular browser you are at risk and you should always make sure you keep it up to date.

Fact: the number of Firefox vulnerabilities and exploits is only going to increase as it takes more share of the browser market.

So, sure, you can evangelise about alternative browsers being nicer to use, or more standards compliant. But, it is irresponsible to lull users into a false sense of security by telling them that, if they use Firefox, they needn’t worry about online security.

It has been a horrific morning. I have been on the verge of tears for the last few hours.

I slept in a bit this morning because a drank a bit too much wine last night. When I finally got up there was no Northern line tube between Morden and Stockwell, so I decided to work from home.
Then the bombs started.

One of the bombs was at Moorgate station (UPDATE: it was actually between Liverpool Street and Aldgate, which is near Moorgate) - that’s my station where I get off every morning - right next to my office!! If I hadn’t had so much wine last night I might have woken up earlier and actually been there!! Just shows…wine is good for you!

I’ve just been watching the images on TV…a man covered in blood being given CPR…people covered in sheets…I’m so upset.

You gotta wonder how long it will be before the jokes start….”had a blast in London”, etc.

My heart goes out to the rest of London today.

The BBC has run an article saying that Methodist bishops from southern Africa have warned that a potential genocide could take place in Zimbabwe.

I would like to say that the Zimbabwean people are not capable of genocide. I would like to say that only Mugabe and his cronies are evil, and that the rest of the population are well-intentioned people suffering under his tireless tyranny. But I fear that a sinister malignancy has been suffusing the minds of many Zimbabweans.

Yesterday I was speaking to someone on the ground in Harare. She has been active in the community, collecting blankets and clothing for the poor souls whose houses have been demolished by the governement. They managed to get a whole lorry full of supplies to these people, who are suffering without food or shelter in the biting Zimbabwean winter. But this was not a heart-warming story. When the lorry arrived, the police confiscated all the supplies, piled them up and burned them. They said that the people didn’t need help - the State would provide for them. If only that were true.

The malice behind such an act makes me nauseous.

Many of the newly-homeless have been carted off to the rural areas. But they are not being resettled. Some of them, I am told, are being held under guard on farms. They have minimal food, shelter and clothing, and no rights. This sounds suspiciously like what happened in the Darfur region of Sudan. In fact, the words “concentration camp” immediately leap to mind.

Perhaps it is just a matter of time before people are killed trying to escape from this captivity. From there, I fear it would be a very slippery slope down to all out genocide.
