Morcheeba: Antidote

Morcheeba’s new album “Antidote” makes quite a break with the style of previous albums: mainly due to the loss of lead vocalist Skye Edwards, whose distinctive silky vocals really helped to set Morcheeba apart from other offerings in the genre. Good luck to her in her solo career!

Her replacement, Daisy Martey - formerly of Noonday Underground - has quite a different vocal style: more shiny-black-PVC than silk. Personally, after listening to the entire album I started to find her shrill voice ever-so-slightly irritating. But it may just be a matter of getting used to it - and besides you can have too much of a good thing (just try listening to an entire Pet Shop Boys album without getting the urge to slap Neil Tenant in the face and tell him to snap out of his melancholy, monotonous, mood).
But Daisy’s style blends extremely well with the music on this album. Some have said that her voice is reminiscent of Dusty Spingfield and, if it is, it would explain why it works well, because the whole album has a kind of retro feel to it.

Underneath the vocals, and despite some of the more retro styling, the music is still classic Morcheeba. So read “c-h-i-l-l-o-u-t”. I rather like it.
